Palak keerai Koottu or Spinach Dhal curry

Initially I used to prepare keerai koottu with tur dhal , it was tasty. Once I had a chance to eat spinach koottu prepared by our aunt with split moong dhal. I simply loved it. It was better than mine. So I would like to share the delicious koottu prepared by our aunt. You can try this version and share your feedback.


Spinach is nutritious. When it is combined with dhal it tastes delicious.


Serves 2 person.

Preparation time 25 mins.


Ingredients:

  1. Baby Spinach(Palak) - 70g(approx)

  2. Onion - 1 No

  3. Tomato - 1/2

  4. Chopped garlic - 2tsp

  5. Split yellow moong dhal - 1/4 cup

  6. Sambar powder - 1 tsp

  7. Salt as required

For grinding

  1. Coconut - 2tsp

  2. Cumin seed - 1/2 tsp

  3. Fennel seed - 1/2 tsp

  4. Small garlic clove - 1

For tempering

  1. Oil - 1sp

  2. Mustard seed - 1tsp

  3. Curry leaves few strand


Preparation:

  1. Pressure cook yellow moong dhal for 3 -4 whistle.

  2. To a pan add a tsp oil. Once oil is hot add chopped garlic and onion and saute it.

  3. Once onion is transparent , add tomatoes cook until soft.

  4. Now add sambar powder and cook for a minute and add the spinach and saute for 2-3 mins(Do not over cook , the taste might change ). Cook until spinach shrinks.



5. Add the cooked dhal and stir it for a minutes.

6. Then grind the coconut, cumin, fennel seed and garlic to a smooth paste.

7. Add the ground mixture and cook for 3 mins.

8. In another kadai heat the oil and temper with mustard and curry leaves. Mix the tempering into cooking spinach and dhal mix.



Now our spinach koottu is ready serve.It taste too good when served hot with rice and ghee. Have a pickle as a side that would be a good combo.
